A body was found in a Dumpster at a rest stop off I-40 near Benson. [N&O]
Ryan Alexander Barnes plead guilty to a lesser charge in a gang-related attempted murder in an apartment complex near NC State last summer. He was sentenced to 93 to 130 months; a cynical speculation of how soon he’ll be free is left as an exercise for the reader. [WRAL]
Hey, we know Jimmy Buffet is terrible, but it’s not worth a murder rap. A Fayetteville-based solider, Sgt. First Class Richard Lopez, was killed while on vacation in Colorado, because he put “Margaritaville” on the jukebox. [MyNC]
The decision on a new downtown Durham circulator bus route was postponed for a month, because I guess they think they’ll know more about the economy by then? [H-S] (reg req)
The N&O takes a fascinating look inside a homeless camp in the woods of North Raleigh, whose residents include a former Wake County Schools employee who lost everything after getting caught in an embezzlement scheme. But their posts on Craigslist keep getting flagged, and they ask you please stop that. [N&O]
Muslim women can learn to swim at the Curran Aquatic Center in Cary, thanks to fundraising efforts to equip a pool with custom blinds to protect their modesty. [N&O]
Need a quick LOL? A sports columnist in the Duke Chronicle attempts to compare J.J. Redick, a workmanlike point shooting guard with above-average stats who was named National Player of the Year in a bewildering decision and has gone on to relative obscurity, to Stephen Curry, an absolutely electric guard who Coach K would bench Redick for in a second. [Duke Chronicle]
Thanks for linking to my short piece in The Chronicle today — thought you might want to change the link, though, because that story was excerpted and watered down from a blog post I wrote about a month ago:
As a quick point of contention, I’m not sure it’s fair to call Redick a “workmanlike point guard with above-average stats who was named NPOY in a bewildering decision.” First, Redick was a shooting guard, not a point guard. Second, he averaged 27 points per game in his senior year — only two or three less than what Curry’s averaging now. And third, Redick was the best player on a No. 1 seed. Listen, I’m as big of a Curry fan as anyone, and he’s my NPOY if I had to vote today. But don’t sell Redick short just to aggrandize Curry.
Anyway, we should learn more about Curry’s prowess tonight — looking forward to it.
I think Duke will put Henderson on Curry tonight pretty frequently to spell Smith, it should be interesting to see how that goes. Personally, I would take Curry over Redick, but Redick was a perfect fit into the Duke system…which Curry probably wouldn’t be.
Duke should win by 10+ and Curry should have less than 25 points.
Position and spelling corrected, and linked changed. Thanks, Ben.
And I think Chris nailed it with the key word “system.” Coach K has a specific way to play college basketball, and he’s been very very successful with it. Redick was perfect for that system, and racked up great numbers in an offense that happened to be designed for him. But once outside the coziness of that system, he’s on the basketball Mendoza Line in the NBA.
Curry is, pardon the hand-waving, a much more transcendent player and talent. Sure, the Basketball Elders can stroke their beards about whether or not Curry’s talent will translate to the NBA, but here’s my guess: it will. Curry is a star.
Duke will win tonight, by like 5. Curry will drop 30. Either way, I’ll be back tonight with the recap.
Was Redick a good fit for Duke’s system? Probably. But I think it’s worth pointing out that the system was eventually tailored to fit Redick, too. Need proof? Just look at how much the offense struggled in the years since J.J.’s departure.
Anyway, not an entirely surprising result. Curry gets his point, Duke wins pretty easily.

Curry is heating up and will probably have more than 25 points.
Duke is on pace to win by 10+, but they are playing much worse in the second half.
5
Trash buckets and a cheap foul by Smith get Curry over 25 (29 points and 6 assists).
Duke by 12.
And I think you HAVE to take Curry over Redick (and I grew up a Duke fan before going to State).

Don’t mind Scott. He’s still disappointed his BFF Adam Morrison didn’t get more hardware.
