Yes, we’re all poor and unemployed and dependent on the government now, but at least there are a handful of free diversions available to take our minds off the fact that our loved ones resent us for being unable to provide for them. You can’t give your children the Christmas you’ve been promising, but you can take them to a Christmas parade, where they can glimpse things they cannot have. There is a free museum, to lull your mind into a state of contemplative boredom. And you can always go to the airport and watch planes take off and land, as long as some people can afford to fly — yes, this is an actual suggestion.
